These bizarre skull paintings have evolved over a period of time. The double-images are raw, offering a peek into the subconscious mind, repelling as they fascinate. Because of the mechanics of perception the high contrast image of a skull is easily recognized and leaves an afterimage on the retina. A skull can unexpectedly appear out of nowhere, whether a leaf in nature or metamorphosing from a modern icon. The image of the skull is interpreted variously by different cultures. It can symbolically signify death or danger, good or bad luck, brevity or joy of life, repulsion or reverence. The skull is always changing in shape and form until the end of life, like a calendar and armature, thus making the skull an ideal subject for metamorphic art. R Butters
